A GARDEN PERCHED UP ON OUR ROOFTOP
You may have heard us talking about The Jardin Perché at LE BHV MARAIS here and there, from time to time! But it is only from today, Tuesday 18th April 2017, that we can finally REVEAL ALL since you can now visit it yourself on the 7th and 8th floors of the Rue de Rivoli store!
A PERCHED GARDEN IN THE HEART OF THE MARAIS
After the success of the “Paris sous les fraises” project and the planting of a soil-free terrace spanning 1000 m² on the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in collaboration with the AFCH, the French Association for Off-Ground Cultivation, and urban vegetable growing expert Sous Les Fraises, LE BHV MARAIS has now also opened its own 1420 m² of vertical garden. It is the largest vertical garden planted on any rooftop in France!
Covering two storeys, the Jardin Perché showcases a growing model suitable for the existing building and a dense urban setting: vertical permaculture. This method enables plants and vegetables to be grown organically in towns and cities, by making room for greenery where it wouldn’t ordinarily grow by itself and by producing local, healthy food under the toughest conditions (high temperatures, little water supply, infertile soil, polluted environment).
Mitigating the constraints: rainwater is collected for watering the plants, without any waste or discharge; plants are grown without any pesticides or herbicides; fertilisers are made from a natural process of organic waste decomposition; two beehives have been installed nearby the garden to ensure pollination of the plants; the high-up location of the garden keeps vegetation away from contamination by heavy metals, which tend to stagnate at ground level, and the vertical veggie boxes, which don’t accumulate atmospheric pollutants, are not affected by runoff water.
WHAT DO WE GROW?
A genuine green lung in the Marais, we grow almost 23,000 plants in the Jardin Perché at LE BHV MARAIS. The latter is helping to restore several varieties with remarkable nutritional, taste and aesthetic qualities: such as red berries (strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and Goji berries), fruit belonging to the Solanaceae family (heritage tomatoes, physalis, peppers, chillies), edible flowers (marshmallow, impatiens, sage and borage) and aromatic herbs (sage, mertensia, wild pepper cress and lovage). It’s enough to inspire you to make your own vegetable garden!
